This was designed specifically for optogenetic research where mice are tethered by a fiber optic cable. The problem with a lid with a hole is it restricts the movement of the mice; however if you simply remove the lid then the mice would easily escape.

By creating this extension it fixes both of those issues, and by adding a slot to this extension it allows for easy install and removal while the mouse is already connected and in its cage.
